Can Lower Ab Workouts Isolate The Lower Abs?

There are many different opinions out there when it comes to whether or not you can “isolate your lower and upper abs” Some experts claim you can and some claim no way.

Technically the word isolation means complete separation. So you can’t “isolate” the lower abs because they work with other small muscles nearby all the time.

Have you heard of “compound exercises”? The bench press is a compound exercise because it works several muscles; the pecs, triceps and deltoids. Now a dumbbell fly is called an isolation exercise because it mainly uses the pecs but it is not completely separated from the triceps and deltoids. It could not be done without those other muscles assisting. It mainly works one muscle hence the word chosen “isolation” but other muscles are involved.


This goes for ab muscles as well. You can’t completely separate “isolate” lower from upper ab muscles or from the obliques but you can focus on those individual muscles depending on the exercise you choose.

The abs muscles are different. Biceps have a single long muscle but the abs muscles run completely different. You get a 6 pack ab from the tendinous band that is between each section.

When you bring your lower body towards your upper body like reverse crunches or leg raises you are primarily focusing on your lower ab muscles.

When you bring your upper body to your lower body such as crunches you are primarily focusing on the upper body. Lower ab workouts or upper ab workouts are never isolated.

IMPORTANT TIP: Do Lower Ab workouts first because the are more difficult. It takes more coordination and balance.
